Overview of the National Marine Jobs & Skills Survey

The BIA has launched the 2025 edition of the National Jobs & Skills Survey, aimed at capturing crucial data on the value and demand for marine jobs across the industry.

National Marine Jobs & Skills Survey

BIA CEO Andrew Fielding emphasized that this annual survey is pivotal for promoting marine careers. He stated, "We use the results to advocate to key stakeholders such as State and Federal Governments for improved outcomes for industry in marine jobs – both in trade and non-trade skills – across Australia."

Importance of the Survey

The results of previous surveys have enabled the BIA to secure vital trades like boat building and shipwrights into the national skills priority and apprenticeship priority lists. This inclusion allows employers and apprentices to receive additional financial support from the Federal Government.

Employment Landscape in the Marine Industry

According to the annual BIA Industry Report, over 35,000 individuals are employed in the marine industry, which encompasses more than 2000 businesses across Australia. Despite this, there remains a significant demand for trade skills across nearly all sectors of the industry.

Addressing Demand

Fielding indicated, "The demand for jobs and skills is very clear... BIA last year stepped up to lead on the Marine Jobs program for the wider marine industry in Australia." This program includes extensive support initiatives such as online recruitment, career events, mentoring, and collaborations with training providers like TAFE and the Australian Institute of Engineering (AIE).

Call to Action

All marine businesses in both the recreational and light commercial sectors are invited to complete the survey, which takes only a few minutes. The survey will close on 5 March.
