Stonewall's Challenges in a New Political Era
Stonewall, the UK-based LGBTQ+ charity, is facing a critical juncture as it may have to cut up to 50% of its staff due to changes in US overseas aid funding under President Trump's administration. The organization has stated it is attempting to navigate the challenges posed by this new political landscape.
Impact of Funding Cuts
In a recent communication with staff, CEO Simon Blake indicated that only roles with dedicated funding would be secure. Stonewall has initiated an organization-wide consultation to address the impending changes. The charity expressed concern over the rollback of hard-won rights for marginalized communities globally, stating, "many charities in the UK are facing tough choices for a range of reasons, including the economic environment. Stonewall is no different."
Funding Sources
Stonewall currently employs 114 people and has relied heavily on the Global Equality Fund (GEF), which has provided over £500,000 between 2021 and 2025. However, recent cuts in foreign aid spending have led to uncertainty about the future of critical projects, especially in Eastern Europe, where Stonewall aids communities in combating anti-LGBTQ+ violence.
The Broader Context
Trump’s administration has long been critical of overseas spending, aligning with an "America First" strategy. The US government has announced a freeze on aid funding while it reviews the alignment of these programs with Trump's priorities. Stonewall warns that this could severely impact LGBTQ+ rights advocacy globally.
Adapting to New Realities
In response to these challenges, Stonewall emphasizes the importance of its work in advocating for LGBTQ+ equality, stating that it is adapting to remain effective in this unprecedented political backlash against inclusion principles. The charity is committed to continuing its mission, despite the economic pressures it faces.
