The principal functions of the Director of Public Prosecutions are to institute, prepare and conduct criminal cases on behalf of the Crown before the Supreme Courts and the Local Courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia.
The Office of Public Prosecutions invite applications from experienced and suitably qualified criminal lawyers, and those legal professionals who are eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia. The Office has several immediate vacancies at the SP2 level and maintains a talent pool of successful applicants to select from for future appointments.
These are challenging yet rewarding roles, your comprehensive knowledge of and experience in criminal law, practice and procedure and your advocacy and advanced communication skills will ensure the delivery of a professional criminal prosecution service to the people of the Northern Territory.
Senior Professional Officer 2
Your primary objective is to oversee summary prosecutions conducted in the Local Court and Youth Justice Court in the Northern Territory’s northern region, to supervise, manage, and provide support to summary prosecutors and other professional staff, and to develop relationships, procedures, and systems with internal and external stakeholders to improve the efficiency and efficacy of summary prosecutions.
- Key duties and responsibilities: Include managing the allocation of prosecutorial work to ensure appropriate representation and an equitable distribution within the work unit, supervising and performance-managing professional staff, and developing strategies for the recruitment, development, and retention of summary prosecutors. The role also involves taking carriage of summary prosecutions, including hearings, bail applications, and appeals, engaging with external stakeholders to improve the effectiveness of prosecutions, and designing a framework with the NT Police Force for the initial conduct and transfer of prosecutions. Additionally, providing professional advice and support to the NT Police as required.
- Essential: The role requires high-level advocacy, communication, and negotiation skills, along with demonstrated leadership in delivering professional services and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve outcomes. Extensive experience in criminal law and advocacy, knowledge of the NT Criminal Code and Uniform Evidence Law, and the ability to interact effectively with people from a variety of cultural and socio- economic backgrounds.
