Experienced Architectural Graduate or Senior Designer
Job Description
Posted on: April 8, 2025
About Us:
Ballast Point is the leading architecture, planning, and construction practice in Inner West, and we're now in our tenth year. We handle everything from concept design through planning to construction, and we’re constantly refining our offerings—whether it’s consultancy services or collaborations with local real estate professionals. Our work is predominantly focused on high-quality single residential dwellings in heritage conservation areas in the Inner West, though our projects span a variety of locations and types across Sydney.
We are both a registered architectural practice and a licensed building company, with Class 2 building and design practitioner accreditation. This offers our team exposure to a broad range of experiences across design and construction, all within a fully integrated practice.
Our close-knit, family-friendly (and dog-friendly!) team is growing, and we need an experienced architectural graduate or senior designer to join our architecture team and work in close collaboration with our construction team and external consultants.
About the Role:
We’re looking for an experienced architectural graduate who is confident working across all stages of a project. You’ll need strong professional Archicad skills and the ability to hit the ground running and will be in charge of managing multiple projects (under architect supervision) at different stages from our Balmain studio.
You’ll work closely with both the architecture and construction teams to document, detail, coordinate, and administer projects. Your responsibilities will include:
- Working independently and collaboratively through all design stages (concept design, DA/CDC documentation and lodgement, design development, construction documentation, design support during construction)
- Visiting potential clients for on-site design consultations
- Client, Council, and consultant communication, engagement and coordination
- Detailed Archicad documentation across all areas—interiors, joinery, lighting, electrical, etc.
- Interpreting briefs and budgets to specify and schedule fittings, fixtures, and finishes
- Some project management, including contract administration and procurement of design-related items
- Producing high-quality documentation efficiently and to deadline
This is a full-time, in-office role based in Balmain.
About You:
You’ll thrive in this role if you’re proactive, detail-oriented, and motivated to deliver excellent outcomes for clients. You are a team player with a strong respect for systems, but you’re also confident in identifying opportunities for improvement.
We’re looking for someone with:
- A friendly, humble, and self-driven attitude with excellent communication skills to get along well with the team, clients and consultants
- An eagerness to be more involved in the construction side of projects than you would at a typical architecture firm
- 4+ years post-graduate experience in an Australian architecture firm
- 2+ years of professional Archicad experience (non-negotiable)
- Experience working on residential architecture (experience in heritage areas is a bonus)
- Solid knowledge of the NCC/BCA and relevant Australian Standards
- Comfortable with office dogs!
A bonus if you can show us:
- A demonstrated track record of contributing to process improvements in previous roles
- A passion for interiors and interior design
- Prior experience in customer-facing roles (even outside of architecture)
What’s on Offer:
- Work alongside a collaborative, motivated, and supportive team reimagining how design and construction are delivered
- Competitive salary, based on experience and skill
- Mentorship under two experienced registered architects
- Real-world experience to support your pathway to registration
- A head office in the heart of Balmain with proximity to good coffee (and the occasional beer)
