The Future of Cinema Summit at NAB Show
The Future of Cinema Summit kicked off at the NAB Show with a panel discussing the impact of AI on jobs and creativity. Speakers acknowledged that while AI can streamline production and reduce costs, it doesn't replace the human touch.
Eric Shamlin, CEO of Secret Level, emphasized that "this is the age of the generalist." He highlighted how AI is revitalizing creative vision, allowing more people to explore their creativity. He stated, “People can now create space operas in their bedroom,” hinting at the democratization of content creation.
Responsible AI Adoption
Shamlin stressed the importance of using AI tools responsibly, ensuring that they supplement rather than replace artists. He believes in a collaborative approach to integrating AI into creative workflows.
Albert Bozesan, from Storybook Studios, noted that while AI can accelerate production, it may limit creative control. He urged artists to embrace AI as a tool for enhancing their work, rather than viewing it as a threat.
The Evolving Job Landscape
The discussion also touched on job transformations in the creative sector. Bozesan mentioned that many new hires at Storybook Studios are from the visual effects field, reflecting a shift in skill demand. Shamlin added that while traditional roles like grips and gaffers are declining, there is a growing need for VFX artists.
He predicted that projects that once took three to five years could now be completed in as little as nine months due to AI advancements. This rapid pace raises concerns about maintaining fair rates and costs within the industry.
Conclusion
As the speakers concluded, they recognized the urgent need to address issues such as copyrights and the overall impact of AI on creative professions. “The genie is out of the bottle,” one noted, emphasizing the necessity for a balanced approach that benefits both technology and the creative workforce.
